Lent 2027 begins on Ash Wednesday, February 10, and ends at Easter, March 28. For centuries Christians have used these weeks to give something up, not as self-improvement but to make room for God. For many of us today, nothing crowds out prayer, presence and rest like the phone in our pocket.
Why fast from your phone?
Fasting has always been about attention: noticing what we turn to for comfort and turning to God instead. "Man shall not live by bread alone" (Matthew 4:4). If your first reflex in every quiet moment is to reach for a screen, a phone fast exposes that reflex, and gives you forty days to retrain it.
Choose your fast
- The social media fast: delete or lock Instagram, TikTok, X and Facebook for all of Lent.
- The rhythm fast: no phone during meals, the first hour of the day and the last hour before bed.
- The Sabbath fast: a full phone-free day each Sunday of Lent. See how to have a phone-free Sunday.
- The whole-family fast: pick one rhythm everyone keeps together, parents included.
A 40-day plan
Before Ash Wednesday
Decide on your fast, write it down and tell one person. Choose what you'll do with the reclaimed time: a Gospel reading plan, a prayer time, a weekly family walk.
Week 1: Notice
Every time you reach for your phone, pause and pray one sentence. You'll be surprised how often it happens.
Weeks 2 to 3: Replace
This is when most fasts break. Fill the specific moments you used to scroll, like the morning coffee or the wait in line, with something planned.
Weeks 4 to 5: Deepen
Add a longer stretch: a phone-free Sunday or an evening of silence. Read Psalm 46 slowly.
Holy Week
Consider a full fast from Good Friday through Holy Saturday, then decide prayerfully which habits you'll carry past Easter.
Make it stick with friction, not willpower
Willpower runs out around day nine. Friction doesn't. Put your phone's "key" somewhere else: move apps off your home screen, charge the phone outside the bedroom, or use a physical blocker like Be Still Card. Tap the card and your chosen apps lock until you tap it again, and every time you reach for them you'll see a verse instead. Sabbath Mode is built for exactly this kind of season.
For churches: a congregation-wide Lent fast
A shared fast is far easier to keep. Many churches pair Lent with a sermon series and give every family a card. See our church-wide digital Sabbath playbook, the free sermon series outlines and custom-branded church cards. Ordering in January gives time for engraving before Ash Wednesday.
Scripture for a Lenten phone fast
- Psalm 46:10: "Be still, and know that I am God."
- Matthew 6:16 to 18, on fasting in secret.
- Isaiah 30:15, "in quietness and in trust shall be your strength."
- Colossians 3:2, set your minds on things above.
